Job Description:
Insulated Glass Unit (IGU) Technicians, also known as IGU assemblers or glass fabricators, are responsible for manufacturing insulated glass units used in windows, doors, and other building applications. They work in glass manufacturing facilities or glazing companies.
Responsibilities:
- Material Handling: Handle glass sheets, spacer bars, desiccants, and sealants used in the assembly of insulated glass units.
- Measurement and Cutting: Measure and cut glass sheets and spacer bars to the required dimensions using cutting and processing equipment such as glass cutters, CNC (computer numerical control) machines, or automated glass cutting tables.
- Spacer Bar Assembly: Assemble spacer bars and corner keys to create the frame for the insulated glass unit, ensuring proper alignment and spacing.
- Desiccant Placement: Place desiccant material inside the spacer frame to absorb moisture and prevent condensation within the insulated glass unit.
- Glass Cleaning: Clean glass surfaces to remove any contaminants, residues, or markings that may affect the quality of the finished IGU.
- Sealant Application: Apply sealants or adhesives to the perimeter of the glass panels or spacer frame to create a seal and bond the components together.
- Glass Pressing: Press the assembled glass panels and spacer frame together using a glass press or vacuum system to ensure proper adhesion and seal integrity.
- Quality Control: Inspect finished IGUs for defects, imperfections, or inconsistencies in size, shape, or sealant application, and make adjustments or repairs as needed to meet quality standards.
- Packaging and Shipping: Package finished IGUs securely for storage or transportation, ensuring they are protected from damage during handling and shipping.
- Maintenance and Cleaning: Perform routine maintenance tasks on equipment and tools used in IGU fabrication, and keep the work area clean and organized.
Requirements:
- Technical Skills: Knowledge of glass fabrication processes, equipment operation, and safety procedures related to IGU manufacturing.
- Experience: Prior experience in glass fabrication, window manufacturing, or related industries is often preferred.
- Attention to Detail: Precision and attention to detail in measuring, cutting, and assembling glass components to ensure accurate dimensions and proper alignment.
- Manual Dexterity: Ability to handle delicate materials and operate machinery with precision and control.
- Physical Stamina: Capability to stand for extended periods, lift and move heavy glass sheets or components, and perform repetitive tasks.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot issues with equipment, materials, or product quality.
- Safety Consciousness: Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to safety protocols to prevent accidents, injuries, or exposure to hazardous materials.
- Teamwork: Ability to work effectively as part of a team, communicate clearly with coworkers and supervisors, and collaborate to achieve production goals.
- Flexibility: Willingness to work in various environments, including production floors, warehouses, or shipping areas, and adapt to changing production schedules or priorities.
- High School Diploma: Education requirements typically include a high school diploma or equivalent qualification.
