Job Description:
Ready-mix truck drivers, also known as concrete mixer truck drivers or cement truck drivers, are responsible for transporting ready-mix concrete from production plants to construction sites. They operate specialized vehicles equipped with rotating drums that mix concrete ingredients during transit to ensure a consistent and uniform mixture upon delivery.
Responsibilities:
- Concrete Delivery: Drive ready-mix concrete trucks to construction sites, following predetermined routes and schedules, and ensuring timely delivery of concrete to customers.
- Loading and Unloading: Load concrete ingredients, such as cement, aggregate, water, and additives, into the mixer drum at production plants using conveyor belts, chutes, or other equipment, and discharge the mixed concrete at job sites.
- Mixing and Agitation: Operate controls to rotate the mixer drum during transit, ensuring that the concrete remains properly mixed and homogenized to maintain its workability and quality.
- Quality Control: Monitor the consistency, slump, and temperature of the concrete mixture during transit, and make adjustments as needed to meet customer specifications and project requirements.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols and regulations, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), securing loads, and following safe driving practices to prevent accidents or spills.
- Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance checks on ready-mix trucks, including inspecting tires, brakes, fluids, and mechanical components, and reporting any issues or malfunctions for repairs.
- Cleaning and Washout: Clean mixer drums and discharge chutes after each delivery to remove residual concrete and prevent buildup, and perform regular washout procedures to maintain cleanliness and prevent contamination.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of concrete deliveries, including delivery tickets, mileage logs, and vehicle inspection reports, and submit paperwork to supervisors or dispatchers as required.
- Customer Service: Interact with customers and construction personnel at job sites, providing courteous and professional service, addressing inquiries or concerns, and ensuring customer satisfaction.
- Route Planning: Plan efficient routes to minimize travel time and fuel consumption, considering factors such as traffic conditions, road restrictions, and delivery schedules.
Requirements:
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL): Possession of a valid CDL with the appropriate endorsements (such as Class A or B) to operate commercial vehicles, including ready-mix concrete trucks.
- Driving Experience: Prior experience as a commercial truck driver, particularly in the construction or concrete industry, is often preferred.
- Concrete Knowledge: Basic knowledge of concrete materials, mix designs, and industry standards related to concrete production, transportation, and placement.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to sit for extended periods, climb in and out of the cab, and operate controls with precision, as well as lift and move heavy materials or equipment as needed.
- Attention to Detail: Carefulness and attention to detail in performing equipment checks, monitoring concrete quality, and following delivery instructions to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
- Communication Skills: Basic verbal communication skills to understand instructions, communicate with dispatchers and customers, and follow directions on job sites.
- Safety Consciousness: Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to safety protocols and regulations to prevent accidents, injuries, or property damage.
- Flexibility: Willingness to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and overtime as needed to meet customer demands and project deadlines.
- High School Diploma: Education requirements typically include a high school diploma or equivalent qualification.
