job Description:
Steel fixers, also known as ironworkers or rebar workers, are skilled tradespeople who specialize in the fabrication, installation, and assembly of steel reinforcement bars (rebar) used in concrete construction projects. They work in various construction settings, including commercial, residential, industrial, and infrastructure projects.
Responsibilities:
- Rebar Fabrication: Read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, or plans to determine rebar specifications, dimensions, and placement requirements.
- Material Handling: Handle and transport steel reinforcement bars (rebar) to the construction site, ensuring they are properly sorted, stacked, and stored for easy access and use.
- Cutting and Bending: Cut and bend rebar to the required shapes, lengths, and angles using hand tools such as rebar cutters, benders, and tiers, or powered equipment such as rebar fabrication machines.
- Assembling Rebar Cages: Assemble rebar cages, mats, or grids according to design specifications, using tying wire, wire mesh, or mechanical fasteners to secure the bars in place.
- Placement and Installation: Install rebar in concrete forms or structures, positioning the bars accurately and securely to reinforce the concrete and provide structural support.
- Fixing and Tying: Secure rebar intersections, overlaps, or splices by tying them together with wire or fasteners, ensuring proper alignment and spacing between bars to meet engineering standards.
- Concrete Pouring Assistance: Assist with concrete pouring operations by positioning, supporting, and aligning rebar within the concrete forms, and ensuring proper coverage and embedment of the bars.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols and regulations, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), following safe work practices, and participating in safety training programs.
- Quality Control: Inspect rebar assemblies and installations for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with design specifications, and make adjustments or corrections as needed to ensure quality workmanship.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of rebar quantities, sizes, placements, and installation details, and complete reports or logbooks as required by company policies or regulatory requirements.
Requirements:
- Technical Skills: Knowledge of construction drawings, blueprints, and specifications related to rebar installation, as well as proficiency in using rebar fabrication tools and equipment.
- Experience: Prior experience as a steel fixer, rebar installer, or ironworker in the construction industry is often preferred.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and carrying heavy rebar, bending, kneeling, and working in various weather conditions.
- Manual Dexterity: Proficiency in using hand tools such as rebar cutters, benders, tiers, and tying tools with precision and control.
- Attention to Detail: Carefulness and attention to detail in reading blueprints, measuring and cutting rebar, and assembling and installing rebar cages to meet design requirements.
- Communication Skills: Basic verbal communication skills to understand instructions, communicate with coworkers and supervisors, and follow directions on the job site.
- Safety Consciousness: Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to safety protocols and regulations to prevent accidents, injuries, or property damage.
- Teamwork: Ability to work effectively as part of a team, follow directions, and collaborate with coworkers to accomplish tasks and achieve project objectives.
